Rivian's R2 repair guide restricts GMA welding on press-hardened steel and flags aluminum structural castings as pending final engineering review.

This week's updates cover new repair documentation for an EV platform, a batch of refreshed Volkswagen position statements, and an 880,000-vehicle rear subframe recall.

Rivian's R2 repair guide defines material limits and restricted operations

Rivian has released its R2 Material Matrix and Repair Guide (RCI-52-26-001-1, dated May 28) for 2026 and later R2 models. The guide maps the body structure across six material categories with a table of allowed operations for GMA welding, resistance spot welding, heat straightening, and cold straightening.

GMA welding on press-hardened steel is listed as "Not Allowed." On ultra high-strength steel, it is not recommended, “except as directed by vehicle-specific repair procedures.” Structural pulling is not recommended outside of the guidelines defined in the document.

Deformation near impact sensors, seat belts, or airbags requires component replacement. Rivian states that repairability procedures for the R2's aluminum structural castings are still under final engineering review and directs shops to contact its Regional Collision or Service Technical Support team for guidance on those components.

Volkswagen refreshed collision position statements

Volkswagen of America has 10 refreshed position statements and a collision parts disclosure and customer authorization form available on OEM1Stop.

The refresh covers body sectioning, SRS airbag replacement, SRS wiring harnesses, structural and unibody component replacement, suspension, steering, and drive axle parts replacement, unibody alignment and repair, approved welders, wheel repair and reconditioning, fasteners, and recycled parts.

All statements include VW's standard language that recycled, salvaged, aftermarket, and reconditioned parts are not authorized for Volkswagen vehicles. The approved welders document lists four inverter spot welders by VAS model number.

The updated parts disclosure form documents replacement part types and obtains owner sign-off before repairs begin.

Honda recalls 880,000 SUVs and trucks for rear subframe corrosion

Honda has recalled 880,514 vehicles under NHTSA campaign 26V367000, covering certain 2016–2022 Pilot, 2017–2023 Ridgeline, 2019–2023 Passport, and 2014–2020 Acura MDX models sold in 23 states and the District of Columbia. Improper coating on the rear subframe can allow premature corrosion near the arm bracket weld area in regions where de-icing salt is used. Honda has reported no injuries or crashes as of May 28.

Dealers will inspect the rear subframe, install a reinforcement kit, and repair or replace components if corrosion is advanced, at no cost. Owner notification letters are expected July 7.
