Two major U.S. automakers, General Motors and Ford Motor Co., announced large-scale recalls impacting a combined 886,896 vehicles in the U.S., citing safety risks tied to engine failures and malfunctioning rearview cameras.
General Motors is recalling 597,630 vehicles equipped with 6.2-liter V8 gas engines due to manufacturing defects in the connecting rod or crankshaft. These defects may lead to significant engine damage or failure, potentially resulting in loss of power and increased crash risk.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the GM recall affects specific 2021–2024 models of the Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL. The breakdown includes 126,027 Cadillacs, 174,208 Chevrolets, and 297,395 GMCs.
Engine failure may result in a loss of motive power, increasing the risk of a crash, the NHTSA said.
GM dealers will inspect the affected engines at no cost. If repairs are needed, the service will be provided for free. For engines that pass inspection, owners will receive a new oil fill cap, higher viscosity oil, an oil filter replacement, and an updated owner’s manual -- all at no charge. Notification letters are expected to be mailed starting June 9.
Consumers can check their vehicle’s recall status by entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) at www.nhtsa.gov. Additional support is available via Cadillac (1-800-333-4223), Chevrolet (1-800-222-1020), and GMC (1-800-462-8782), referencing recall number N252494000.
Separately, Ford has issued two recalls affecting a total of 289,266 vehicles due to faulty rearview camera systems. The first recall (No. 25V270000) targets 2015 model year F-250, F-350 and F-450 trucks, as well as Ford Expeditions, Lincoln Navigators and Lincoln MKCs. The issue stems from a loose or damaged printed circuit board terminal header in the rearview camera, which may cause a distorted or blank image.
A second Ford recall (No. 25V273000) applies to certain 2022–2023 Ford Broncos, where the rearview camera may fail to display an image when the vehicle is shifted into reverse.
To address the issue, Ford dealers will replace the defective cameras free of charge. Owner notification letters were scheduled to be sent by May 5. Vehicle owners can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 for more information.
Both automakers advise affected vehicle owners to act promptly to ensure vehicle safety and compliance with recall instructions.
