Lucid's New Measuring and Casting Rules, Plus a Kia EV9 Airbag-Suppression Recall

Lucid issues two structural repair position statements as Kia recalls the EV9 over an airbag fault.

Lucid's Sept. 1 position statements require 3D measurement before and after every structural repair on the Air and Gravity, and bar replacement of key cast components like the torque boxes and mid-floor casting.

Lucid mandates 3D measurement before and after every structural repair

Lucid Motors said it requires pre- and post-repair three-dimensional digital measurement reports for all structural repairs to the Air and Gravity, according to a position statement issued Sept. 1. The statement applies to the body structure on Lucid’s key structural, ADAS, and crash safety mounting list (including frame rails, torque boxes, spring towers, and subframes).

The pre-measurement establishes if an impact resulted in more than 3 mm of distortion requiring replacement. The post-measurement confirms that the repair is within original dimensions. Both must be done before performing an alignment or any ADAS or safety-system calibration. Reports must be uploaded to the Lucid Repair Tracker.

Car-O-Liner Vision X2, Celette Naja, Spanesi Touch, and Carbench Contact Evolution are approved.

Some Lucid castings cannot be replaced or purchased

According to another position statement from Lucid (dated Sept. 1), high-pressure die-cast components are not repairable in the event of a collision. The front and rear torque boxes and the mid-floor crossmember casting on the Air, as well as the front and rear torque boxes and the mid-floor mega-casting on the Gravity, are examples of these components. These components are not available as service parts.

Lucid notes that unauthorized repair of these components may result in altered crash integrity. However, damage may be submitted to the Lucid Body Repair Team at BodyRepairProgram@LucidMotors.com for evaluation for possible localized repair. Current allowable repairs are listed on the Lucid Tech-Info Portal.

Kia EV9 recall addresses passenger airbag suppression fault

Kia America is recalling 21,290 2025–2026 EV9s due to the occupant detection system failing to disable the front passenger airbag for a child occupying a child restraint, per the Part 573 filing for NHTSA campaign 26V545.

If the bladder tube of the Occupant Detection System (ODS) mat located beneath the front passenger seat is not properly routed, it may become pinched when the seat is adjusted to the highest position. Repeated adjustments may also damage the bladder tube. Either condition can prevent the system from suppressing the front passenger airbag for a child in a child restraint system, rendering the vehicles noncompliant with FMVSS 208. The filing includes a Do Not Drive and Park Outside advisory. Owner notifications begin Oct. 20, and VINs became searchable Sept. 4.
