New-Car August Sales Forecasted to Hit Annual Sales Pace of 15.8 Million

EV sales are expected to surge to more than 9% of all new-car sales in August as consumers rush to buy before federal incentives end.

U.S. light vehicle sales are expected to continue a modest rebound in August, with 1.43 million units forecasted for the month and a seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of 15.8 million — a slight dip from July’s 16.4 million but a notable rise compared with June’s softer performance, according to data from S&P Global Mobility.

Analysts points to sustained electric vehicle (EV) demand and escalating automaker incentives, alongside evidence of eased credit conditions — factors bolstering short term sales despite underlying fragility. EV traction is particularly striking: BEV market share climbed above 9% in July and is projected to rise to around 10% or more in August, driven by a rush ahead of the Sept. 30 expiration of federal EV incentives, although a sharp pullback is expected into 2026.

“Auto demand in August is expected to carry some of the current momentum, as electric vehicle sales continue to support monthly volumes in advance of the Sept. 30 expiration of federal EV incentives," said Chris Hopson, principal analyst, S&P Global Mobility. "At the same time automakers continue to raise incentive levels and there are signals that credit conditions are loosening. While good for short term boosts, these signs also point to supports enhanced when underlying demand is weakening."
