General Motors will temporarily idle its Wentzville Assembly Plant in Missouri from Sept. 29 to Oct. 19, citing parts shortages. Most workers across all three shifts will be laid off during this period, according to a letter sent to United Auto Workers (UAW) members by the union and GM’s plant leadership.
The letter added that “skilled trades, stamping, body shop, final process and those groups that support these departments” may still have work during the layoff period.
Details on which parts were in short supply — and why — were not immediately available.
Normal operations are expected to resume Oct. 20.
The 3.7 million-square-foot Wentzville facility, located about 40 miles west of St. Louis, builds GM’s midsize pickup trucks and full size vans, including the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana.
Operations at the same plant came to a halt in July 2024 when workers at a nearby seat supplier went on strike.
