All-Electric Ram Pickup Canceled, Range-Extended Version to Be Built Instead

The coming Ram 1500 REV will now be an electric truck with a gasoline generator that will extend its driving range.

Stellantis has discontinued development of the fully battery-electric Ram 1500 REV pickup, redirecting its efforts toward a range-extended electric version of the model formerly known as the Ramcharger, which will now carry the REV nameplate.

Stellantis cited waning demand for full-size electric trucks in North America among its reasons.

The original Ram 1500 REV, unveiled in 2023, was intended to be a full battery EV debuting in the first half of 2024. The new Ram 1500 REV will be an electric truck with a gasoline generator (range-extender) built on the same STLA Frame platform.

The range-extended version is expected around 2026. Stellantis said the truck will boast a maximum of 647 horsepower while delivering up to 690 miles of driving range.

EVs vs. Range-Extended Hybrids: Different Repair Needs

Battery EVs tend to have fewer moving parts, which may reduce certain maintenance tasks. But collision repairs tend to be more expensive and complex due to battery pack protection, specialized safety protocols, and potential structural changes.

Range-extended models like the new 1500 REV retain many ICE components while adding EV systems, meaning collision shops will need to maintain dual competencies.

Industry Trends & Stellantis Strategy

Stellantis joins other automakers pulling back or recalibrating EV commitments. It has also publicly dropped its goal of 100% EVs by 2030 (in Europe) and is calling for regulatory flexibility to allow hybrids and other non-EV powertrains.

Stellantis has emphasized the value of its STLA Frame platform’s flexibility—its ability to accommodate electric, gasoline, hybrid and hydrogen drivetrains. This flexibility becomes more valuable in a market where full-EV demand is uneven.
