Automakers Report September, 3Q Sales

Automakers on Oct. 3 reported September sales results.

Subaru of America, Inc. (SOA) reported 45,658 vehicle sales for September, an 8.6% increase compared with September 2021 (42,054).

The automaker also reported year-to-date sales of 401,115, a 13.3% decrease compared with the same period in 2021. Subaru continues to face inventory challenges as the result of microchip and supply chain issues affecting automakers across the globe.

In September, Crosstrek was the top performer by volume and achieved its best month ever, with 16,092 sales---surpassing the record set in August 2019 with 15,860---and a 35.6% increase compared with the same period in 2021. The Outback saw a 20% increase compared to September 2021, while the Ascent increased by 18%. Year to date, the Crosstrek posted a 14.2% increase, while the Ascent SUV posted an increase of 6.9% compared to the same period in 2021.

Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) reported third quarter 2022 sales of 16,782 vehicles, with volume tempered heavily by supply constraints of the most in-demand vehicles and trims.

Despite the challenges, Outlander and Eclipse Cross continued to lead year-to-date sales performance for the brand across the quarter---up CYTD 43.3% and 20.5%, respectively.

Outlander's 30,481 sales this year represent the second-best year-to-date performance in the nameplate's history, and the strongest performance ever year-to-date when considering retail-only sales.

Port closures due to Hurricane Ian toward the end of the quarter further hampered the brand's ability to meet sales projections for its most highly sought-after models. To help those who suffered complete losses of vehicles as a result of the storm, MMNA is offering a $500 incentive, valid from Oct. 4 until Jan. 3, 2023, toward the purchase of any new 2022 or 2023 Mitsubishi vehicle, valid at Mitsubishi Motors dealer partners located in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.

Having sold the last of the 2022 Outlander Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)s in July, MMNA anticipates substantial sales increases for the model as the next-generation flagship 2023 Outlander PHEV enters showrooms in November.

Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) reported U.S. September sales of 179,050 vehicles, up 17.1% on a volume and daily selling rate (DSR) basis versus September 2021. September sales of electrified vehicles totaled 35,419, representing nearly 20% of total monthly sales.
For the third quarter of 2022, TMNA reported U.S. sales of 526,017 vehicles, down 7.1% on a volume and DSR basis. Third quarter electrified vehicle sales totaled 111,713, representing 21.2% of total year-to-date sales.

Kia America announced best-ever September sales of 56,270 units, leading to the highest third quarter performance in company history. These record-breaking performances are fresh on the heels of record August sales achieved by the brand.
