Volvo Windshield Position Statement Update and GM Collision Assistance in Vehicle Apps

Volvo formalizes genuine-glass and certified-shop requirements as GM expands the in-app tool that routes drivers to its repair network.

Two recent OEM updates give shops new specifics on glass replacement and customer routing.

Volvo: genuine glass, certified install only

Volvo Car USA issued an updated windshield replacement position statement dated May 11. The statement requires all Volvo windshield replacements to be performed at an authorized Volvo retailer or certified collision center using only Volvo Genuine Windshields and adhesives.

Volvo says aftermarket windshields cannot be verified as meeting its specifications and may compromise structural performance and the operation of any safety system that depends on the windshield. That includes the Active Safety Domain Master (ASDM), which houses the forward camera and radar inside the upper edge of the windshield.

Two technical conditions show up at intake. Vehicles equipped with Multi-Dimensional Heads-Up Display use a different windshield manufacturing process, and installing a non-HUD windshield can produce redundant projected images or compromise HUD functionality. ASDM camera and radar recalibration is required after replacement, performed through Volvo's VIDA diagnostic system.

Volvo specifies genuine PUR adhesive kits by name and notes that proper installation through a Volvo center supports a minimal safe drive-away time. Volvo-certified shops are now the only authorized installation channel under the updated statement, and non-certified shops working on Volvo vehicles will need to coordinate with a Volvo center for the install and VIDA recalibration.

GM expands Collision Assistance with self-initiation

General Motors announced May 14 that its Collision Assistance experience now includes a self-discovery feature, letting drivers launch the post-collision flow themselves through the myChevrolet, myGMC, myBuick, and myCadillac apps rather than waiting for the tool to trigger after a detected crash. The feature requires an active OnStar service plan.

Through the app, Collision Assistance helps drivers collect scene details using the camera and on-screen prompts in a self-paced experience that doesn't interrupt emergency calls and connects them to facilities in the GM Collision Repair Network.

GM describes that network as including both independent body shops and dealership facilities. Network shops follow GM repair procedures, perform pre- and post-repair scans, and have access to GM Genuine and ACDelco parts.

Shops in the GM Collision Repair Network may see more app-routed arrivals over time. Shops outside the network may see more GM customers arriving with app-collected scene documentation and questions about pre- and post-repair scans and GM Genuine parts.
