The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) confirmed a data breach involving nearly 300,000 crash reports after a compromised account was used to improperly access its Crash Records Information System (CRIS).
On May 12, TxDOT detected unusual activity within its CRIS database. Subsequent investigation determined an account had been compromised and used to download a large volume of crash records. Access to the affected account was promptly disabled, according to TxDOT.
Although Texas law does not mandate notification in such cases, TxDOT has taken proactive steps to alert potentially impacted individuals. The agency is mailing notification letters to those whose personal information was included in the accessed reports. Data exposed may include names, mailing and physical addresses, driver license numbers, license plate numbers, car insurance policy numbers, and additional personal details.
Affected individuals are encouraged to contact a dedicated assistance line for support. The toll-free number, 1-833-918-5951, is available Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. CT, excluding U.S. holidays. Callers should have the engagement number provided in their notification letter available.
In response to the breach, TxDOT is implementing enhanced security measures to safeguard account access and prevent similar incidents. The investigation into the compromise remains ongoing.
