American Honda Motor Co. Inc. has updated its position statement to require pre- and post-repair scans on all Honda and Acura vehicles involved in a collision, regardless of model year. This change is designed to ensure collision repairs meet Honda’s repair standards from start to finish, eliminating ambiguity and aligning with the realities of today’s advanced vehicle technology.
The update reflects evolving safety systems and the need for proper recalibration so that those systems function in unison with the rest of the vehicle.
“By updating the language, this ensures repair procedures are performed correctly and appropriately documented for insurance carriers when applicable,” said a spokesperson for American Honda Motor Co. Inc. The new statement removes any “up for interpretation” moments, shifting from terms like “should” to definitive language such as “must.”
American Honda’s spokesperson said the move is part of Honda’s commitment to accurate, safe repairs.
“This ensures repairs are done correctly the first time to Honda’s standard of repairs, resulting in less time down and peace of mind for the customer while freeing up resources for repair professionals,” he explained.
Honda encourages shops — especially independent repair facilities — to use its Service Information System (SIS) website for access to proper repair procedures and job aids. These resources help ensure that collision repairs go beyond classroom fundamentals and meet OEM standards in the field.
asTech Simplifies Adherence with Rules Engine
As an American Honda partner, asTech, a Repairify company, announced its scan tools can help shops comply automatically with Honda’s new requirements. The asTech Rules Engine uses factory-authorized technology to automate scan type selection in line with OEM guidance, DRP expectations and certification requirements.
“Honda’s announcement requiring OEM scans for all Honda and Acura vehicles after a collision is an important step to ensure that vehicles are being repaired fully and that all safety sensors are functioning appropriately,” an asTech spokesperson said. “The asTech Rules Engine automates compliance for shops so workflows are not interrupted or slowed by this process change.”
asTech's Rules Engine can be programmed to be OEM required every time, specifically to meet Honda’s new standards. The company’s ASE- and I-CAR-certified technicians also provide remote diagnostic support when needed, helping repairers stay focused on completing accurate repairs.
