GM Collision Network Certification Tiers, Ford Explorer Rear Rail Sectioning, and EV Repair Safety

OEM updates this week include structural parts access tiers, an expanded repair procedure, and EV PPE requirements.

GM has detailed the four certification levels of its Collision Repair Network in its Spring 2026 Repair Insights publication, and a recent I-CAR Repairability Technical Support update confirms Ford now allows rear rail sectioning on 2017-2019 Explorers.

Spring 2026 Repair Insights breaks out the GM Collision Repair Network into four certification tiers: Basic, ICE Specialty, BEV Program, and Fleet Program. Basic certification gives shops a listing in GM's Collision Assistance experience, GM CRN locator placement on gmparts.com, branded marketing materials, and no-cost enrollment in the top tier of my GM Partner Perks.

ICE Specialty certification adds Cadillac Aluminum Repair Certification and the ability to order and install restricted structural parts for the Cadillac CT6 and Chevrolet Corvette C8. The BEV Program covers comprehensive battery electric vehicle training and access to advanced BEV tools and equipment, with a BEV Specialty active facility listing. The Fleet Program adds advanced training, tools, and marketing materials specific to Chevrolet BrightDrop vehicles, with a CRN Fleet active facility listing.

Ford Explorer rear rail sectioning now allowed on 2017-2019 models 

A recent I-CAR Repairability Technical Support update on the 2017-2019 Ford Explorer notes that Ford previously did not allow sectioning of the rear rails and required complete assembly replacement. Ford now allows rear rail sectioning, with the procedure documented in the workshop manual under section 501-30, Rear End Sheet Metal Repairs > Removal And Installation > Rear Side Member Section.

The update reiterates Ford's outer uniside sectioning requirements: Ford's 2019 Explorer workshop manual states that body side sectioning repairs must not be carried out in areas of door hinge, safety belt, or striker anchoring points, and that welding within 50 mm (1.96 in) of door hinge or striker locations may compromise structural integrity. The 2017-2019 Explorer workshop manuals are available on motorcraftservice.com.

GM publishes EV repair safety guidance for collision shops 

The Spring 2026 Repair Insights also outlines EV repair safety considerations from Joe Ciagala, brand quality manager for GM EV Propulsion, and Valdemar Escamilla Sr., lead senior HV SID — Propulsion Controls Diagnostics. High-voltage cables on GM EVs are color-coded orange, and most service procedures call for Class 0 insulated gloves along with safety goggles or face shielding, with the gloves remaining on until the absence of voltage has been confirmed through zero-volt testing.

Certain procedures or scenarios call for arc-rated 8-cal/cm² Hazard Risk Category 2 personal protective equipment compliant with NFPA 70E. For EVs involved in any kind of collision, GM advises a complete vehicle inspection performed outside the repair bay due to the risk of water intrusion in the battery causing a short or fire, with technicians watching for exposed cables that could lead to electric shock.
