The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is urging drivers to slow down as Independence Day approaches, highlighting alarming new data: 11,775 people died in speeding-related crashes in 2023, with an estimated 332,598 more injured.
To address the persistent issue, NHTSA will roll out its Speeding Catches Up With You prevention campaign on July 7. The campaign, which runs through the end of July, will include a national television advertisement focused on the deadly consequences of speeding. Law enforcement agencies across the country will also increase high-visibility enforcement efforts throughout the month.
“Speeding puts everyone at risk, and the consequences can be deadly,” said NHTSA Chief Counsel Peter Simshauser in a statement. “NHTSA’s latest campaign aims to educate the public about the dangers of speeding, promote strong traffic safety laws, and support law enforcement on our nation’s roads.”
Speeding contributes to nearly one-third of all traffic fatalities annually in the U.S., according to the agency. As millions prepare to travel during the busy holiday period, the campaign serves as a timely reminder of the need for safer driving behavior.
