Michigan College Launches Comprehensive EV Engineering Certificate Program

Lawrence Technological University (LTU) in Southfield, MI, unveiled a pioneering electric vehicle (EV) certificate program, aiming to prepare engineers for the rapidly evolving EV industry. This program is designed to provide both new and existing engineers with specialized knowledge and hands-on experience, crucial for innovation in this burgeoning sector.

The LTU EV certificate encompasses a diverse curriculum focusing on critical aspects of EVs. Core topics include batteries, power electronics, electric drive systems, vehicle sensing and controls, thermal management, testing and data acquisition. This comprehensive approach ensures a well-rounded education, pivotal for emerging engineers.

What sets the LTU program apart is its unique blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application. The curriculum features two mandatory courses: EV architecture and systems, and EV safety. Additionally, students can choose from a range of technical elective courses like battery applications for EVs, electric machines, power electronics, vehicle sensing and controls, thermal management in EV, and EV testing and data acquisition.

A hallmark of LTU's program is the integration of faculty with robust industry backgrounds. Adjunct faculty from leading automotive companies such as Ford, GM and Stellantis bring invaluable real-world insights to the classroom.

The EV certificate program is further enhanced by state-of-the-art lab facilities. These include the Johnson Control Vehicle Systems Lab, Formula Electric Lab, Alternate Energy Engineering Lab, Environmental Test Chamber and Industry 4.0 Automation Lab. These facilities provide students with hands-on experiences, bridging the gap between classroom learning and practical application.

LTU also offers flexible learning modes, with a hybrid approach of online and in-person courses, accommodating diverse learning preferences and schedules. The program is also financially accessible, featuring industry scholarship programs, tuition rate discounts and packages. Credits earned in the certificate program are transferable to several LTU master's degree programs, including mechanical engineering, automotive engineering and electrical engineering.
