The Boring Company Proposes Tunnels in Austin and San Antonio

Elon Musk’s The Boring Company (TBC) has started discussing potential tunneling projects in Austin and San Antonio with city officials. 

Austin’s Development Services Department told KXAN that TBC proposed a tunnel in Austin and wanted to understand the permit requirements for the project. TBC’s proposed tunnel would run from Tesla’s Gigafactory Texas, where the automaker plans to produce the Model Y sedan and eventually the Cybertruck, to downtown Austin.  


Local Texas media outlets also reported the tunneling company pitched a project in San Antonio, about 80 miles from Austin, to local officials. Sources claim TBC is in talks with Greater: SATX, a private-public nonprofit that seeks to economically grow the San Antonio region. 


In each city, TBC seems to be targeting tunnels in strategic areas like near the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and the San Antonio International Airport. TBC has a history of building or pitching tunnels in areas with a lot of foot traffic, like airports. 


For example, TBC’s second project in Las Vegas, the Vegas Loop, plans to run through the McCarran International Airport. In San Bernardino County, TBC’s Ontario Loop will also connect to the Ontario International Airport.


So far, TBC has successfully built and started operations on one tunneling project, the Las Vegas Convention (LVCC) Loop, in Sin City. Officials interested in working with TBC have visited the LVCC Loop to see if similar tunnels would be viable in their city.
