Even a year after Greeley, CO, was pounded with golf ball-sized hail, local body shops and dent repair shops continue to feel the storm.

That storm is one these local shops don’t necessarily mind braving. For customers, however, patience has been a must.

Local shops are still working on repairs stemming from summer hailstorms a year ago.

Generally speaking, smaller, local shops aren’t quite as backed up as larger national chains. Still, for Michele and Cole Fox — owners of Northern Colorado Auto Reconditioning, located at 1020 26th Ave. in Greeley — about half of the repairs they’re doing right now are from last summer’s hailstorms.

“We get calls literally daily, or people stopping in daily, for damage from last year,” Michele said.

Northern Colorado Auto Reconditioning has even had customers bring cars in from out of state or the Denver metro area, Michele said.

There is a bit of a domino effect, Michele added. When customers file insurance claims, they are often met with recommendations from insurance companies on where to take their cars for repairs. These repair shops are often national chains.

Those larger chains have become flooded with repair jobs and, in some cases, are backlogged for upward of a year. A car could spend a couple of months in a shop awaiting repairs.

Cole Fox said the turnaround time in his shop is a bit shorter, a few days to about three weeks, depending on the extent of the damage.

Kevin Deubach, one of the owners of American Auto Body, in Garden City, CO, also said about half the shop’s workload is repairing damage from last year’s hail.

Shops are firmly backed up, but, fortunately, they won’t stay that way forever.

Matt Vesely, owner of Auto Restorations Auto Body & Paint Inc., in Greeley, said those huge backlogs are starting to taper off, at least slightly.

However, similar to what the Foxes and Deubach have experienced, as Vesely’s shop starts to get caught up, other customers who have waited to get their cars fixed are starting to emerge, hoping to avoid the prolonged wait times that have been prevalent at shops everywhere over the past year.
