The Rhode Island House approved an accelerated phase out of car taxes for East Providence residents on June 17.

Because East Providence's fiscal year has a later start date, the city's car tax phase out began a year later than all the other cities and towns in Rhode Island.

According to East Providence Mayor Bob DaSilva, the acceleration will eliminate around 3,300 more vehicles from the tax roll while cutting the average motor vehicle tax bill by an estimated 40% or 50%.
