NHTSA Holds Public Meeting on Updated Driverless Guidance

In September 2017, the U.S. Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released new federal guidance for Automated Driving Systems (ADS): A Vision for Safety 2.0.

This document updates the original 2016 guidance by incorporating public and congressional feedback.

On Nov. 6, 2017, the NHTSA held a meeting to address concerns about provisions of the guidance, specifically the safety self-assessment asked of automakers. Following the opening remarks by acting administrator Heidi King, a panel of NHTSA’s staff heard comments from various stakeholder groups.

The panel included:

Nathanial Beuse, associate administrator, Vehicle Safety Research, U.S. Department of Transportation

Debbie Sweet, automated vehicle policy adviser, NHTSA

As with the original guidance, A Vision for Safety 2.0 is voluntary.
