Romeoville, IL Finalizes Plans to Transform Old Skate Rink into Body Shop

The popular USA Skate Center in Romeoville, which closed after 42 years in March, will soon transform into an auto body repair shop.Village trustees voted on August 5 to approve a special-use permit for a final development plan for Car Care Collision Center.

Trustees found the change bittersweet, but were in favor of the new use.

“It’s a happy and a sad day for me,” Trustee Joe Chavez said. “When the roller skating rink was put in, I was a young man at the time. And I just came out there – disco night – roller skating and all that good stuff back in the day.”

The 2.3 acres in the Marquette Business Park, 1301 Naperville Drive, were acquired by Car Care Collision Center, which proposed remodeling the 24,000-square-foot building into an auto repair facility.New overhead doors are being installed along with new entrances. A new main entrance is planned for the northwest end of the structure.

Two entrances will give access to Naperville Drive, with the north driveway housing the main 50-space parking lot.A new earth-tone dryvit material will be installed over the existing metal panels of the old skate building’s exterior.

In addition to the auto repair use, a Hertz rental car business will operate out of the development, which Mayor John Noak said was significant because the village only has one other car rental business in town. The USA Skate Center held its last skate session the night of March 8. Longtime skaters were allowed to take home mementos from the rink.
