SCRS Quick Tips: Why Pre-Diagnostic Alignment is Critical to the Repair

Share This:

Mike Anderson of Collision Advice and Danny Gredinberg of DEG, in partnership with the Society of Collision Repair Specialists (SCRS), present Quick Tips for those in the collision industry.

In this Quick Tip, Mike is joined by Bud Center, director of technical products and curriculum at I-CAR, to talk about performing pre-diagnostic alignments.

This step in the repair is a not-included operation, and critical in the diagnostic process. In many cases, the automaker will give guidelines in the repair procedures or owner's manuals, but it’s necessary to understand the different systems that can be affected to know where to look.

Many don’t consider how steering angle sensors tie in to systems like anti-lock brakes or vehicle stability control, and it is not just an ADAS repair that necessitates pre-diagnostic alignment. However, ADAS systems---like lane keep assist---also rely on the steering angle sensor and vehicle thrust line providing accurate feedback.
