Americans Continue to Drive Up Mileage on Roads

Americans traveled 11.5% more on roads in July 2021 than in July 2020, according to the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHA) most recent numbers.

July 2021 saw 30 billion more vehicle miles logged than July 2020. Travel for July 2021 was approximately 290.1 billion vehicle miles.


Seasonally adjusted, 267.6 billion miles were traveled in July 2021, an increase of 13.1% or 31 billion vehicle miles over July 2020. This also represents a 0.2% increase or 0.4 billion vehicle miles compared to June 2021.


According to the FHA, cumulative travel in 2021 changed 12.8% or 203.4 billion vehicle miles, and the estimated cumulative so far for the year is 1,795 billion vehicle miles.


All U.S. regions saw an increase in miles driven for July 2021 compared to July 2020. The largest increase was in the North Central with 8.8% and 65 billion vehicle miles.


The West region saw an increase of 13.1% and 64.1 billion vehicle miles. The South Atlantic’s 12.5% increase is for 63.7 billion vehicle miles.


The Northeast region experienced an 11.4% increase and 38.2 billion vehicle miles. The South Gulf’s 59.2 billion vehicle miles is a 12% increase.
