Toby Chess and I-CAR Instructors Put Insurers through their Paces

Written by Autobody News staff

HEY TOBY  will return in July.

On May 6, Toby Chess and fellow I-CAR instructors hosted an evening dinner lecture for about 250 insurance adjustors to familiarize them with the ICAR Steel Unitized Structures Technologies and Repair Course (SPS07). On hand to train the estimators and adjusters were Doug Moore, Eric Stretten, Ken Boylen, Steve Morris, Steve Saunders, Mike Mastro, Frank Schiro, Jeff Lawson, Bob Mickey, and of course, Toby Chess.

The event was held at the Sheraton Hotel in Cerritos.  The reception started at 5:00 PM, with dinner at 6:00 and the I-CAR SPS 07 at 7:00 PM.
Also in prominent attendance were owners, managers, and employees from 33 Southern California shops. Surrounding the dinner tables were 20 vendors supporting the program with table exhibits.
The event began with a stirring Marine color guard presentation courtesy of the  11th Marine Regiment from Camp Pendelton, CA, with Cantella Patrick-Henry energizing the room with an a capella Star Spangled Banner.
A highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of two ‘veteran’ flags, flown by the Marine Corps over Fallujah, Iraq during the hostilities there.
Toby and Steve Morris accepted Old Glory from the Marines on behalf of I-CAR.
Before dinner ended, Toby reminded those in attendance why it was important to support the March Taylor Memorial Scholarship for deserving students. Tom Holmes, of Holmes Body Shops, and Craig Oliveira from Kent Automotive stepped forward with generous donations. The hat was passed through the crowd.
Toby began the SPS07 class with one of his trademark magic exhibits, illustrating the finer matrix of high strength steels with a tube of ball bearings, contrasting them with a tube of golf balls to illustrate the less-dense packing structure of conventional steels.
In a similar act of showmanship each table was invited to demonstrate to themselves how heated steels can be readily stretched like the literal taffy candy on hand.

With dinner and demonstrations out of the way, the adjusters were lead through SPS07 covering:

– Understanding Unibody Design Technologies and Construction
