Onondaga County residents saw something they rarely see — hail the size of dimes, nickels, even golf balls. Now, auto body repair shops are seeing another rarity — customers coming in for estimates to fix car hoods, roofs and trunk lids pockmarked by hail.

By the end of Friday, Casey Rotella expected to have seen 50 or more cars whose owners were seeking estimates to repair hail damage. Rotella is body shop manager at his father’s company, Tony Rotella’s Auto Body Shop on Horan Road, Geddes.

“Ninety-nine percent of the stuff that we’re seeing is on the hoods, the roofs and the trunks, and then on the tops of fenders, the tops of doors and the tops of quarter panels,” Rotella said.
