Toby Chess Asks for Your Contribution for Toys for Marine Families
With one week to go before California Collision Repairers present at least $20,000 worth of toys to the Marine families at Camp Pendleton, Toby is asking the collision community to dig a little deeper.
Says Toby:
- Hey Everyone: We are taking the toys to the Marines of the 11th Batallion stationed at Camp Pendleton on December 20th, 2010 and you are all invited to go. To date, your generosity has purchased $18,450.00 of toys (over a 100 new bikes). I was hoping for $20,000.00 and still a week to go. Thanks to the 72 shops (to date) who participated in the toy drive. A special thanks to Craig Olivera (Kent Automotive), Dick Valentine (Van Tuyl Automotive Group), Steve Morris (Holmes Body Shops) and Tom Williamson (Marina Autobody).

Ford Adds Soy Foam Seat Cushions to Ford Explorer; Expands Use of Eco-Friendly Material Across Lineup
- The new 2011 Ford Explorer will offer more eco-friendly features including soy foam in seat cushions and seatbacks as well as at least a 25 percent increase in fuel economy over the current model
- Ford is expanding its use of bio-based soy foam through nearly all of its vehicle lineup this year as part of an ongoing effort to use more renewable and recyclable materials
- There are more than 2 million Ford Motor Company vehicles on the road today with bio foam content; Ford's use of bio foam has helped the company reduce its petroleum oil usage by more than 3 million pounds annually and carbon dioxide emissions by 11 million pounds
The 2011 Ford Explorer will feature soy foam in seat cushions and seatbacks. The bio-based polyurethane foam will be one of the new, eco-friendly features in the Ford Explorer which goes in to production later this year.
"The new Explorer will deliver fuel economy at least 25 percent better than the current model as well as include sustainable materials like soy foam seat cushions and other eco-friendly features we will detail soon," said Amy Marentic, group marketing manager, Ford cars and CUVs. "Consumers will be pleasantly surprised they can get all these new features without having to sacrifice the capability, utility and safety they want for their families and adventures."
The addition of soy foam in the Explorer expands Ford Motor Company's commitment to using more sustainable materials in all its vehicles. By year's end, nearly 100 percent of Ford's North American vehicle lineup will feature the eco-friendly material.
Ford has more models with seats that use bio foam than any other automaker. The 2011 Explorer will become the 23rd model to feature soy foam. To date, Ford Taurus, Mustang, F-150, Focus, Flex, Crown Victoria, Escape, Edge, Expedition and Econoline, as well as Mercury Mariner and Grand Marquis, Lincoln MKS, MKX, MKT and Navigator use the sustainable material. In addition to Explorer, the Fusion, Fiesta, F-250/F-350 Super Duty, Mercury Milan and Lincoln MKZ will get soy foam by the end of 2010.
Soy foam has helped Ford reduce its annual petroleum oil usage by more than 3 million pounds, and is up to 24 percent more renewable than petroleum-based foam. The use of soy foam also has helped Ford reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 11 million pounds as the biomaterial provides a 67 percent reduction in volatile organic compounds emissions.
"Soy foam is just the tip of the iceberg in the development of vehicle materials from natural resources," said Debbie Mielewski, Ford polymer technical leader. "We have to entertain the thought of bio-replacement in baby steps, looking at every aspect of a car that could be green. One day I hope to see the automotive world go totally compostable, removing the use of petroleum-based parts 100 percent."

Parts firms face collapse without loans, expert says
North America's automotive parts supply base faces an imminent collapse over the next 30 to 90 days unless the federal government provides at least $10 billion in immediate funding, Grant Thornton LLP partner Laura Marcero said March 12.
Manufacturers with diverse auto clients weathering storm
While most companies have seen a downturn since the recession began, recent news that Chrysler plans to suspend activity in most North American factories this summer meant another blow for the nation's auto parts suppliers - an industry that employs more U.S. workers than the automakers themselves.
Changing business threatens long established SF body shop
"People are putting off doing everything," said Jorge Fernandez, 62. "First, they're not driving as much. And if they get into an accident, they're taking the cash from the insurance company and not getting repairs done."
Car dealers found after 81 vehicles vanished
At least one Nebraska dealership executive arrested.
Police have located three missing executives from a car dealership where 81 new vehicles worth roughly $2.5 million vanished, and at least one of the three has been arrested. Story here.
Auto Body Shop Sees Increase in Hit-and-Run --- Mainstream News
At Gurley-Leep collision repair there is a new trend emerging: cars with damage from a hit-and-run.
"It seems as though recently we've seen more of that happening," said manager Bryon Whitford. "A gentleman just this morning came to our office and said he was involved in a hit-and-run."

Big Three's drive to survive in auto industry
In a desperate bid for solvency, General Motors is seeking a merger with Chrysler. Chrysler has talked with Renault and Nissan about partnerships. And Ford, GM and Chrysler — backed by Michigan lawmakers — are lobbying Washington to give them cash, implying that failure to provide a bailout could doom the industry to bankruptcy.
Chrysler circulating plug-in hybrids to dealers
Chrysler LLC has been demonstrating plug-in hybrid prototypes to some dealers that are further developed than those previously shown by the automaker, the company's president said.
Recession hits do-it-yourself auto repair market as well as new auto sales
“A lot of it is that people are not spending money if they don’t have to,” said Tim Heustis, owner of Heustis Auto Supply Inc., which is associated with the National Auto Parts Association. “We feel like it will come back. The cars out there that are not getting repaired will eventually need to be fixed.”
Sales began slumping last summer, when gasoline prices rose to more than $4 a gallon, he said, but they really fell in the last two months of 2008.

SEMA Jobber Update---28% Say Business is Up
SEMA recently visited two WD shows on opposite ends of the country in order to find out from jobbers how their businesses are holding up despite today’s down economy. While it was expected that many would claim sales are down, nearly one-third of the small sample of jobbers surveyed said business was flat while a surprising 28% said business was actually up.

Doing the Right Thing: Planning, Training, and Executing a Multishop Waterborne Conversion

We asked Rusty Rauls (left in photo), Vice President-COO of the Fix Auto corporate stores, and Todd Burdette (right in photo), Refinish Manager at Anaheim Fix Auto, what they learned in their multiple shop locations about handling the waterborne transition.
Air Everywhere: Control, Clean, Heat, Dry, Accelerate
[This is the same article published in Western Paint Primer Part 2, see PDF Paint Primer downloads (Part Two A and B) to read in that format. It is continued in Air Everywhere Part 2]
The February 21st Glendale/Foothills CAA chapter meeting hosted a 9 person owner and manager panel to discuss their waterborne transition experience. The panel was balanced between large, medium, and smaller shops, with 5 paint companies nominating shops using their waterborne paint lines. The panel consisted of:
Mike Ernst, Folks Autobody; Dan Schimpke, Beverly Coachcraft; Benjamin Mercado, Quality Body Works; Mike Townley, Valley Motor Center; Robert Turchan, Pride Auto Body; Jim Marko, Kemp Ford Auto Body; Greg Gunter, Greg’s Auto Body; Rudy Romero, Longo Collision Director; John Kendricks, Seidner’s Refinish Manager.
Nathan Simmons, the incoming Chapter president, addressed the panel with some written questions and asked additional questions during the discussion.
What A Jobber Recommends for Waterborne Air
Interview with Tony Rizzolo, Business Development Manager, Finishmaster
What are you seeing and recommending to help shops improve their air management?
The old thought was we refrigerate the air to lower the moisture in it and when you’re running, the air comes out of the compressor at 180° through a refrigerated system the air drops down to 45-ish degrees. You need a desiccant unit to get the moisture down below 10%.
We like Sullivan Palatek compressors, because they have the filtration and the desiccant units built in. You’ve got clean air going right through the body shop. No moisture whatsoever. The desiccant comes in the form of pellets, but it is in a throw-away container, like an oil filter. You just unscrew it and dispose after about three years.
Reign of Water Begins in California
At last November’s NACE, new paint technology got significant presentation time because waterborne paint is a hot-button environmental issue, especially in California. The perception that what happens in California is the ‘thin edge of the wedge’ for the rest of the country and California’s regulatory activism give disproportionate influence to the state’s already powerful market trends. Regulations in progress are designed to reduce volatile organics, mainly formaldehyde, chloroform, and MTBE by 75% —but there is speculation that by the time the rest of the country adapts, the target reductions will be more like 90%.

OCTOBER 30, 2007, Oceanside, CA
Fires, Reverse 911, and New Brooms for Halloween
We’ve just endured our fourth day of wildfires here in San Diego County. Even here in Oceanside, many miles from the epicenter of the fires, the air reeks with acrid smoke and fly ash flutters down outside our windows. The sun is a blood red, the full moon a fierce pumpkin orange. Houses and hillsides are swirling smudges of black and gray. Formerly lush avocado groves are left a charred moonscape. These could be no better backdrops for a horror film and, as if to complement the Halloween season, one of the major fires is named Witch.
The statistics are staggering: well over 500,000 people evacuated – more than the entire population of Wyoming – over 1,500 homes destroyed, many more damaged; a billion dollars in property damage alone, firefighting costs will exceed that; over 500 square miles of burn zone, larger than the city of Los Angeles.
Aggressive Santa Ana winds drove the fires westward at speeds up to 80 mph, one gust registered 110 mph, so fast that fire fighting pilots were unable to fly aircraft, even to monitor fires, let alone drop water and retardant. Only a few 2-ton remote control ‘Predator’ drones were able to fly over and survey the blazes, even as the company that designed and built them had to evacuate employees from offices below. The National Guard’s C-130 transports, potentially the best fire suppressors, are yet to be outfitted with the tanks that were promised after the 2003 Cedar fires in this area. Politicians point fingers, even as they vie for media attention.

Toyota to recall about 110,000 Tundras
Toyota will recall about 110,000 Tundra vehicles sold in the United States due to safety concerns. The move was triggered by excessive corrosion on the frame rear cross-member of certain Tundra vehicles which operate in areas with high road salt use. "In the worst case, the spare tire stowed under the truck bed may become separated from the rear cross-member. Spare tire separation will create a road hazard for following vehicles and increase the likelihood of a crash," said the Japanese auto maker in a statement.

GM will annouce Pontiac to be Eliminated
General Motors will announce an updated survival strategy to the auto task force. GM had been considering phasing out Pontiac instead of sticking with a plan to have it continue as a niche brand. GM said on Feb 17 that Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick and GMC would be its four core U.S. brands. On March 31, the task force told GM, surviving on $15.4 billion in bailout funds, that its restructuring plan wasn't aggressive enough and denied a request for $16.6 billion in additional aid. GM is expected to tell the government that it will stick with plans to keep GMC, Buick, Chevrolet and Cadillac. Saab, Hummer and Saturn are for sale.

Applying Group Power to Independent Body Shop Businesses
An Interview with Scott Biggs, CEO of Assured Performance Network

Scott Biggs
Scott, I know you’ve been around the industry a while. How did you get started?
By accident of course! I actually got involved with the collision industry without ever intending to. I became a partner in a fledgling computer management company back in 1984. We created a state-of-the-art computer management system that became the leading product of its time. When I joined the company and took over managing the operations they were essentially bankrupt, but didn’t know it. We got that company turned around and eventually a paint company bought it. I got a crash course in collision repair dealing with many of the premier body shops across the US as our customers.
