    The California Autobody Association (CAA) recently told its members that it is still opposed to AB 1483, the bill introduced by Assemblymember Wilmer Amina Carter that would require shop owners to affirm that all crash parts on the estimate were in fact used. The CAA said their position will not change unless amendments are made to address concerns.

    California Color Source, Inc. and Akzo Nobel Coatings co-hosted a waterborne technology clinic at Contra Costa College in San Pablo, Calif. on the evening of May 8. Over 130 attendees represented collision repair facilities and industry vendors.

    The issue of paint capping has been making its way through the courtrooms and into the offices of the California Board of Equalization in a fight for regulation of this illegal act. Paint capping is interfering with a customer’s right to choose a body shop and as a result, driving lawsuits from small claims court to Superior Court. The act of capping is also cheating the state out of an estimated $50 million in sales tax based on the paint and materials that are used, but not credited.

Keystone acquires Tulsa-based aftermarket parts business

    Keystone Automotive Industries, Inc. recently announced that it has acquired the assets of Auto Panels Plus, based in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Auto Panels recorded sales of approximately $5 million for the twelve months ended March 31, 2007 and operates locations in the Tulsa and Oklahoma City markets. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

ASA launches A-HIT health insurance benefit in Texas

    The Automotive Service Association (ASA) has launched its new health insurance trust plan for members, which provides convenient access to a number of different health plans. Called the Automotive Industry Health Insurance Trust (A-HIT), this important new benefit will be available nationwide by the end of the year, with the initial rollout to cover members in Texas, Kansas and Missouri.

Shop licensing legislation introduced in Texas

    Automotive repair shop licensing legislation has been introduced in both the Texas state Senate and the Texas state House of Representatives.
    Senate Bill 1120 was introduced by Texas Sen. John Carona, (R-16), and House Bill 2211 by state Rep. Jim Murphy, (R-133). These are companion bills.
