Renowned Street Rod Painter Charley Hutton Added to Impressive SCRS Lineup of Attractions at SEMA
Written by StaffAs the days pass and the SEMA Show draws closer, the Society of Collision Repair Specialists (SCRS) continues to demonstrate its commitment to putting together a program that will be remembered by collision repairers attending the Show long after it ends.
The latest addition to SCRS's outstanding list of events is a live discussion with Charley Hutton, a renowned personality in the automotive industry, regarded as one of the most popular painters in the custom car world. The Society will be welcoming Hutton on Wednesday, November 2, from 2:00-3:00 p.m. at the Collision Repair & Refinish Section Stage (North Hall #10873) for an onstage interview and question and answer session.
Working out of his shop in Nampa, Idaho-Charley Hutton's Color Studio-Hutton has produced an impressive number of automotive refinishing projects over his career, most recently through his work using PPG Automotive Refinish. He has garnered a number of prominent honors as a result.
His talents have been recognized with two Ridler Awards, presented by Autorama, a premier customer car show. He is also the winner of several Street Rod of the Year and Custom Rod of the Year awards, as well as being the recipient of America's Most Beautiful Roadster award.
In a continuing effort to respond to consistent participant feedback, Automotive Service & Repair Week (ASRW) announced on September 7 its 2012 event - featuring the milestone 30th annual NACE event - will take place Oct. 11-13 at the New Orleans Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, LA. The 2012 event will again follow a Thursday-Saturday day pattern, with education beginning Wednesday, Oct. 10.
"Almost a year ago, we put the attendees and exhibitors in charge of key decisions about the future of ASRW, including where and when the event takes place," said Ron Pyle, ASA president. "After multiple surveys among both attendees and exhibitors, the results were clear: our audience wants this event in New Orleans, and we're pleased to make it happen."
Based on attendance trends leading up to the 2011 event, the move to New Orleans is expected to draw a significant population of new attendees, as a new region of the United States has access to this international event.
Representatives from New Orleans will be onsite in Orlando to formally open housing, assist attendees with reserving hotel rooms and answer questions about the city.
NACE was last held in New Orleans in 1995; CARS in the late 1980s.
The Society of Collision Repair Specialists (SCRS) has added award-winning painter, fabricator, television personality, and Autobody News Columnist Rich Evans to an already packed lineup of activities taking place this year in the north hall of the Show.
Evans, owner of Huntington Beach Bodyworks and Rich Evans Designs, is known nationally for his work on television shows such as TLC's Junkyard Wars, Chop Cut Rebuild and Car Warriors on the SPEED Channel; and for his distinctive custom painting techniques that allow him to create some of the most striking heavy vehicle graphics in the world, including his much heralded "Tattoos for Cars" series.
While Evans has built his name on custom work and fabrication, he built his career on collision repair, and he will join SCRS at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 2, to speak about his career in the collision repair industry and the ever-changing landscape of the business and its technical side.
SEMA attendees are invited to stop by the SCRS booth (North Hall # 10727) to take part in this live interview.
"Our goal this year has really been a strong combination of developing the best, most relevant, educational topics we could put together for the industry through our RDE program, while also embracing the best elements and opportunities the SEMA Show has to offer, and highlighting them in ways that are focused and distinct to the collision repair community," explains SCRS Executive Director Aaron Schulenburg. "Adding dynamic and well known personalities like Rich Evans into the mix, who can provide exposure and insight into collision repair expertise that is as uncommon as it is fascinating, is one way to do this. We're excited to have Rich join us in the booth for what is sure to be an interesting discussion, and a great tie in to many of the topics that will be discussed in depth during the 2011 RDE program."
NACE/CARS Receiving Renewed Enthusiasm from East Coast Shops
Written by Chasidy Rae SiskFor the first time since 2003, the NACE expo will be held somewhere other than Las Vegas. From October 5-8, 2011, NACE will take place at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL. As of July, attendee registration for 2011 surpassed double the registration of 2010, a fact largely attributed to the new east-coast location.

Kathleen Moyer of Rex’s Body Shop and Garage Inc. in Vincennes, IN is very excited that NACE is being held in a new location in 2011 and hopes they continue alternating locations.
Luckily, this is what NACE has announced they intend to do, rotating the expo to different locations around the country in upcoming years in order to attract new attendees.
Though he and his wife attend NACE every other year, Shawn H. Moody of Moody’s Collision Centers in Maine is also happy for the change of scenery, pointing out that Orlando is a more family-friendly environment than Las Vegas, and therefore more likely to attract attendees who can correlate the trip to the expo with a family vacation to Florida. His absence from NACE in the past has often been due to the distance between Maine and Las Vegas, and he likes the idea of toggling the location between the east and west coasts.
The keynote speaker for NACE’s Opening General Session will be Social Media Guru Chris Brogan. Brogan will headline the Opening General Session at ASRW 2011, Thurs., Oct. 6, from 8:30 a.m.–10 a.m.

“We carefully selected Chris Brogan this year and feel his presentation will be a highlight of ASRW,” stated Ron Pyle, ASA president. “Attendees can expect an entertaining and engaging presentation and also to walk away with ideas and solutions they can easily implement as soon as they get home.”
“Technology and the advent of social media in particular have changed the way we all do business, so we feel Chris Brogan is not only a timely choice for this year’s keynote presentation, but an extremely relevant one," said Harry Hall, DuPont North America Sales Manager—Refinish. “Brogan has become a leader in his field through his innate use of technology and connecting it to business, which parallels DuPont Performance Coatings’ philosophy of innovation as a leader in the collision repair industry.”

Automotive Service & Repair Week (ASRW) is pleased to announce BASF has committed to a presence on the show floor at the upcoming 2011 event. This year is the first since 2008 for ASRW to include BASF among its list of exhibitors.
“NACE is the premier event for the collision repair industry and we understand how important it is to represent the BASF brand among this core audience who uses BASF products,” said Chuck Soeder, vice president, BASF Automotive Refinish. “We look forward to supporting the industry by exhibiting at ASRW this October.”
BASF can be found in booth N1413 at the ASRW Expo.
“BASF’s participation in ASRW this year is truly significant for several reasons. Aside from our audience consistently requesting to see them on the show floor, their return is also the latest event in a growing list of positive turns ASRW has experienced this year, leading up to the Orlando event,” said Ron Pyle, ASA president.
Florida Collision Repair School to Receive Mini-Makeover at NACE 2011
Written by StaffThe Collision Repair Education Foundation will be presenting Lake Technical Center of Eustis, FL with a “Mini-Makeover” during the International Autobody Congress & Exposition (NACE) Thursday, October 6th in Orlando, FL. Lake Technical Center was the only school in Florida that applied for the Collision Repair Education Foundation’s 2010 $50,000 Ultimate Collision Education Makeover grant. Due to the school’s proximity to NACE in Orlando, the Education Foundation has been gathering industry supporters/donors to fulfill portions of the school’s $50,000 wish list that they provided as part of the grant application. School instructors, administration and their collision students will be on hand during a presentation at NACE to showcase how the Mini-Makeover donors have benefited the school’s collision program.
The presentation will take place from 1 p.m.-2 p.m. in the ASRW Media Center located inside the Orange County Convention Center’s West Building.
Scott Kruger, Executive Director of the Collision Repair Education Foundation, said, “Lake Technical Center was one of 52 schools nationwide that applied for the Foundation’s 2010 Ultimate Collision Education Makeover grant and the only school in the state of Florida to apply. As industry professionals from across the country will be gathering in Orlando for NACE this fall, we thought it would be a great opportunity to not only highlight the Makeover grant program, but also help this local school through the support of our donors and supporters. We invite industry professionals attending NACE and ASRW to attend the presentation to hear how Lake Technical Center’s collision program has benefited through the support of industry donations and to learn how to get involved with helping schools in your local area.”
BASF Corporation and AASP Announced as First Official Sponsors of the 2011 Repairer Driven Education Series
Written by StaffThe Society of Collision Repair Specialists (SCRS) is pleased to announce that the BASF Corporation has stepped up as the first official sponsor of SCRS' 2011 Repairer Driven Education (RDE) series. It is the second year in a row that BASF has been first to commit support to RDE, which will take place in the afternoons on each day of the SEMA Show in Las Vegas this November.
Support of the program makes it possible for SCRS to provide the comprehensive curriculum in the RDE series, which created significant buzz as a highlight of last year's SEMA Show. The resources sponsors provide serve as a foundation for the program, and demonstrate the commitment participating companies have in regard to industry education.
"For over a decade, we have been increasing our support for collision repair educational and improvement programs," explained BASF Manager of OEM and Industry Relations Joe Skurka, whose company is committing to RDE at the Master's level. "We want our customers to thrive, not just survive, and helping provide the tools to make this happen is one of our core strategies. We see both SCRS and the Repairer Driven Education series as viable opportunities to support this strategy."
Giving the industry the knowledge it needs to adapt to its ever-changing marketplace is not only important, but a key to the ongoing health of the profession. "There's absolutely no guarantee that the approach, procedures, business models and products that worked successfully last year will work in the future without understanding the changes taking place in the marketplace," noted SCRS Chairman Aaron Clark. "A strong industry is an industry that adapts to its surroundings, and a fundamental benefit of RDE classes is preparing attendees to succeed in the future with content that focuses on a wide variety of business issues."
